Course Overview

Organizational History of 21st Century Space Flight is a leadership course set against the backdrop of the high-profile history of mankind's achievements in space. The core reading is ORIGINS of 21st-Century Space Travel A History of NASA’s Decadal Planning Team and the Vision for Space Exploration by Asner and Garber. During the course, learners will reflect and evaluate the decisions and costs of 21st-century spaceflight. They will examine what motivates individuals to push the boundaries of human achievement while considering the associated risks. By the end of the course, learners will formulate a project proposal and plan for their industry. The final plans will include goals, defined requirements, schedules, budgets, and risk assessments. After the course, learners will use the information to create projects and goals for their organizations and workplaces.

Course Design

Organizational History of 21st Century Space Flight is an interactive, learner-centered course, that uses rich multimedia to increase engagement and satisfaction. As space travel is a highly covered exposition in human ambition, grit, and achievement this course features images, videos, text, research components, and gamified quizzes. The course leverages adult learning theory, Mayer's 12 Principles of Instruction, and multimodality to increase learner satisfaction, engagement, and knowledge retention. Organizational History of 21st Century Space Flight contains five modules. Each module covers organizational goals and incidents beginning with Arthur C Clark’s We Can Rocket to the Moon, 1939, and Von Braun’s The Mars Project, 1952. Each module will introduce the learner to new evolutions in project goals for space travel, including the Apollo and Shuttle programs. During each module, learners will evaluate the economic and technological influences on organization and project goals resulting in the Vision for Space Exploration (VSE) established in 2004.
